Once passing through the final security gateway, I walked right into 2 Red Cross volunteers, ready to direct me to baggage claim, and with instructions on how to find out which of us would be picking up a rental vehicle. At baggage claim I ran into all 3 other volunteers from the plane ([Volunteer 1], [Volunteer 2] and [Volunteer 3]), and was told there was a 5th volunteer [Volunteer 4], wearing more subtle Red Cross attire.
I then used my laptop (my cell phone had died AGAIN) to check my messages. I had a voicemail with a reservation number for a vehicle and the names of 2 volunteers ([Volunteer 3] and [Volunteer 4]) I was supposed to drive to the hotel. I waited in the vehicle rental line with at least a half-dozen other volunteers.
I feel really bad for the rental agent who helped me. He ran into obstacle after obstacle, probably took an hour to get the vehicle checked out. First, the name on the reservation didn't match my photo ID, then there was an issue with the ID, then their inventory system hung, then there were printer issues. But he plowed through, and eventually he got me through.
In the meantime [Volunteer 3] kept trying to contact [Volunteer 4], but to no avail. We ended up going to the hotel without him (assuming he left with someone else).
